Sisters Claire Powell and Sharon Holman are lifetime goat ranchers.
They grew up raising and showing Angora goats on their father's ranch out side of Rocksprings, Texas. Raising goats was and is a family business. It is not unusual to find both sisters helping their father with his own ranch today. The experience of raising angora and Spanish meat goats made the transition to Boer goats in 1994 a natural choice for the sisters.

Sharon and Claire are both hands on owners and operators of their Boer goat business.
The 10,000 acre Holman Ranch is located 25 miles south of Sonora. Forty-five miles north of Sonora is the Powell Ranch which covers 20,000 acres. The size and location of these ranches requires each to assume their share of the ranching responsibilities. When one considers the scope and vastness of each ranching enterprise, it is easier to understand why Claire and Sharon demand the traits of hardiness and high maternal instincts in their animals. Powell-Holman Boer goats are ranch raised and ranch hardy. Powell-Holman Boer goat must be able to travel the country side, forage on their own and kid unassisted.

The ABGA 1997 National Show awarded the partnership seven championship trophies. Always looking to further improve their herd, they traveled to South Africa in 1999 to increase their knowledge of the South African Boer goat. While in South Africa, they arranged to import embryos from top South African genetics. The infusion of these genetics into their herd resulted in the superior offspring the pair had envisioned. In 2005 they partnered with Lukas Burger in South Africa to import embryos from South Africa to Australia and they bring the animals to the USA. These new genetics have helped Powell-Holman remain at the top in the Boer Goat and market wether goat industries.

Powell Holman made a major change in their business plan in the spring of 2009 when they dehorned and castrauted 90% of their buck kids.  Prior to 2009, all males were marketed as breeding stock.  Check out the Win Photos to see some of the winners.

Not only are Claire and Sharon active in the ranching aspects of the Boer goat, they also have volunteered countless hours in helping the Boer Goat from a breed association standpoint. Claire is an approved ABGA Boer Goat Judge. Sharon served five years on the American Boer Goat Association Board of Directors. This is just one more way the sister team of Claire Powell and Sharon Holman has made the Boer goat a great agriculture product not only for Texas, but for all of the United States.

The Powell ranch is located West of Eldorado, TX and the Holman Ranch is located South of Sonora, TX.
